In the early seventies, the company founded two friends, Rich Novak and Jay Shuirman, in one of their garages in Santa Cruz, California. The dream of these two surfers was the creation of skate products. For the realization of these dreams, the NHS Santa Cruz Skateboards founded in 1973 and develops and sells skateboard products to this day.

In 1975, designer Jim Phillips started working for NHS. Its main goal was to create skateboard designs that could compete with the developed surfers industry. Nowadays Jim's son Jimbo Phillips is one of the major graphic artists at Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz has also begun to produce snowboard equipment, but has remained essentially at the roots of the proven graphics of old oldschool skateboards.
