Surfers do not have any more familiar brands than Billabong. It was the birth of the industry at all. It was founded in 1973 when it was founded by Gordon and Rena Merchants and in the city of Gold Coaste in the southeast of Queensland. The word Billabong is taken from the native Australian language, and in translation means the dead arm of the watercourse. The slogan of the brand is still "Only the surfer knows the feeling!"

Billabong began in 1973 with the bathing shorts that Gordon Merchant himself designed and made at home and sold them to the local surf shops through which they came to the surfers themselves. They soon found out that his shorts' stamina was several times higher than the others. Merchant reached her with the triple seam technique. This fact soon shrieked and Merchants started to search for themselves, many of whom came under Merchant's sponsors' wings. In the 1980s, Billabong shorts were available across Australia, during the 1990s the brand expanded to New Zealand, Japan, or South Africa. At the beginning of the new millennium Billabong is available in most countries of the world.
